Anotation | The project will focus on the relationship between the environmental conditions in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin region and the culture reflecting coal mining and heavy industry. These links are very strong and have a long tradition; however, they are still unexplored by modern methods. The Upper Silesian Coal Basin is also the last active coal basin in Europe, and is therefore an ideal field for such research. From the beginning, its industrial, economic, and urban development has been accompanied by specific cultural activities, which have been directly influenced by environmental conditions. The essence of the project is interdisciplinary Polish?Czech research on the history of Czech, Polish, and German literatures, visual arts, geographies, and folklores. The international team will utilize the tools of environmental history, deep mapping, literary cartography, geology, geography, and critical discourse analysis. |
