Anotation | The overall goal of this project is to embrace the opportunity of the 30th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution to both commemorate the events and the era of freedom and democracy in the Czech Republic and open a public debate which will not only remind the events in their national and international historical context but also critically reflect the political, cultural and socio-economic development and put it in a perspective for the future. The UO wishes to create project activities that will help faculty, students as well as the public to take active part in the 30th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution and in engaging with the public during the celebratory events. The funding by the requested grant will add up to the means that can be expended from university?s internal sources ? that includes personnel for organizing the project, scholarships for involved students, available technical equipment and operational costs. In a broader sense, a number of other U.S. Embassy?s priority themes besides 30th Anniversary of the Velvet Revolution will be addressed by the activities connected to our project. Promoting democracy is closest to the main theme, by dealing with the topic of Velvet Revolution, emphasizing its role and the role of many related phenomena for democratic transformation of Czechia. The project will stress the importance of the historical events for the democratic state today and what this legacy means for the future, if we want to maintain and foster democracy in our society further. Critical thinking plays a leading role in this sense and our project will create space for discussing the historical facts from different perspectives (political, cultural, socio-economic) including life experience from the historical period and putting them into perspective with today?s world. |
