Anotation | Surgical resection of malignant liver lesions is currently established as the only curative treatment of liver malignancies. Various treatment techniques include anatomical or non-anatomical resections, ablation techniques or even complex procedures, i.e. ALPPS. Another alternative to traditional surgical treatment in management of small lesions is stereotactic radiotherapy using the CyberKnife system, which allows paliative radiotherapy of liver lesions even in patients who cannot undergo a surgery while profiting more from CyberKnife therapy than from traditional chemotherapy or other treament algorithms. The comparison of efficacy between liver resections and radiosurgical therapy using the CyberKnife system is an imporant lead in determing the optimal treatment algorithm for liver tumours and metastases. The comparison may result in changes to the decision-making process in establishing a treatment procedure, tailord specifically for an individiual patient. |
