Anotation | Surgical therapy is currently the only potentially curative method of treating liver malignancies, which allows a complete eradication of the tumor or may extend the disease-free interval. Surgical techniques include resection, radiofrequency ablation or liver transplant. Surgical resections can be performed as open through a laparotomy or laparoscopically. Surgical methods are connected with considerable morbidity and mortality depending on the extent of the disease. These negative factors are reduced by using a laparoscopic approach, which allows not only diagnostic, but more importantly therapeutic procedures while reducing patients' stress. Laparoscopic surgeries can also be performed by using hybrid or manually assisted approaches. A comparison of long term results of open and laparoscopic approaches in treatment of liver malignancies may lead to changes in selecting a proper treament algorithm tailored specifically to an individual patient. |
