Anotation | The Ras superfamily of GTPases comprises central components of many important pathways in the eukaryotic cell and is implicated in severe human diseases, but its global sequence and structural diversity and evolution remains largely unexplored. This project builds on the recent progress in genome sequencing and in bioinformatic an phylogenetic methods and aims at a detailed evolutionary and sequence analysis of eukaryotic Ras superfamily GTPases. We will analyse data from public databases and from on-going genome projects for unicellular eukaryotes Bigelowiella natans, Guillardia theta and Mastigamoeba balamuthi. An extensive taxonomically-rich dataset of GTPases will be subjected to exhaustive sequence and structural analyses. We will define evolutionary relationships within the superfamily via detailed phylogenetic analyses. The reconstructed evolutionary history of the superfamily will be correlated with major events in the evolution of eukaryotes and the eukaryotic cell. We will create an Internet portal allowing wide access to the resources and tools generated in the project. |
