Network Security Principles

Don't get off-line

DON'T SHARE YOUR IDENTITY WITH ANYONE

Your student account is your identity and it is essential that you handle it responsibly. It can be misused very quickly with a little carelessness. If you suspect misuse, report anything immediately to .

MEMORY MATTERS

Remember your account login details and never store them near your devices. Never share them with anyone. Use password manager programs for strong passwords.

BE CAREFUL ABOUT YOUR PRIVACY

Always enter login and personal information privately. Be very cautious when logging in on other people's devices. Caution pays off.

DO NOT SAVE YOUR PASSWORD AND ALWAYS LOG OUT

Never save your passwords to a web browser on someone else's computer and log out whenever you stop working in the Learning System, Portal, or email.

PROTECT YOUR ACCOUNT AND DATA

Protect your account, including your data. Use strong passwords of 20 characters, the more the better. Do not use the gesture to unlock your device in the presence of unknown persons. Do not share any of this with anyone, ever.

CONSIDER BEFORE YOU LEND

Think before you lend your devices to someone else. If necessary, then appropriately restrict or preferably disable access to your data and accounts.

DO NOT FILL IN OR SEND

Never respond to any request to fill in and send your login and password. The University does not know your PASSWORD and does not need to know it. We always post vital information about changes to systems on the Portal.

THINK CRITICALLY

You won't believe everything you read on the internet. Think about every message you receive in the mail. Is it from a trusted source? Could the attachment or link contain a virus? Think twice before you click once.

ANTIVIRUS AND FIREWALL

Keep your system up to date on your devices, including your mobile phone. Use an antivirus program and keep it up to date. Every university computer and business phone should have proper antivirus software. If you do not have one contact us at .

BACK UP AND SCAN

Back up your data, making sure the backup is in a different location than your device. Check your backups and protect them from misuse in the same way as the original data. Back up regularly.

FOLLOW THE RULES AND HONOUR THE LAW

If you're not sure, ask. The Information Technology Centre is here for you.

EDUCATE YOURSELF

If you feel like nothing can surprise you, that you know everything and have been everywhere at least twice, then it's the perfect time to take an online course called Cybersecurity Basics.
