Degree programme in a nutshell

The Department of Mathematics offers an active research environment with an international character.

During your studies, you can participate in research projects led by faculty members of the Department of Mathematics, as well as in the preparation and organisation of various events held by the Department of Mathematics and the entire university (Vojtěch Jarník International Mathematical Competition, Summer school, etc.).

Every year, students in the program attend a highly distinguished lecture series and participate in international conventions featuring well-known mathematicians.

During your studies, you can also try studying at a foreign university thanks to the Erasmus+, CEEPUS, and other programs. There are many universities to choose from throughout Europe and beyond.

Master program Mathematics with a specialisation Fuzzy Mathematics is a field applicable in Industry.

What do we expect from you?

We expect a positive attitude towards mathematics and enthusiasm for studying mathematics. Knowledge acquired during the Bachelor's degree program in Mathematics or related programs will be sufficient for your studies.

What will you learn?

The Master′s programme in Mathematics at University of Ostrava develops and expands the basic mathematical skills you have acquired during your bachelor′s degree programme. During the programme you will be introduced to advanced topics of mathematics, selected according to your own mathematical interests and preferences. At the end of the programme you will write a master′s thesis, that takes you to the forefront of research for a particular area of mathematics. The master′s thesis is written under the supervision of an experienced researcher in the chosen field.

The range of courses the Master′s programme covers the following areas of mathematics:
Algebra, Analysis, and Geometry/Topology, Probability Theory, Statistics, Optimisation, or other subjects relevant to your degree programme. In the Fuzzy Mathematics specialisation, you will also gain deeper knowledge in the areas of fuzzy logic and fuzzy modeling.

After obtaining your master′s you will have plenty of job opportunities to choose from. You could decide for a career in healthcare, e.g. using mathematics to improve capacity management, or employing mathematical models to better understand how the human nervous system works.

You could also work in the media industry, applying your knowledges to achieve better social network filtering, use your knowledge of algorithms and machine learning to create models for predicting earthquakes.

You can also choose to expand your specialist knowledge base by pursuing a PhD programme as offered by the University of Ostrava.
