Annotation:The course aims to discuss the global importance of the Arctic as well as the policy of Arctic and non-Arctic states towards the region. Students will contribute to the course with its views via preparation and active participation in the Model Arctic Council (MAC). Introduction to the course: The warming of the Arctic is two times higher than the global average. The melting ice cap of the Arctic Ocean and the adjacent mainland might have global consequences like rising sea levels or political instability. The melting ice reveals new shipping routes and mineral resources, which are the most common drivers for Arctic states to increase their presence in the region. In the last decades, the presence has gone hand in hand with the militarization of the Arctic, especially in its Russian part. The Arctic is also getting attention from non-Arctic states like China, South Korea, and Czechia, which has a long-term tradition of Arctic research and is applying for observer status in the Arctic Council - the most significant regional organization.
