Annotation: | Zoological gardens in developed countries at the 21st century are involved in many various roles as conservation, public education, research, and recreation. The conservation role includes two important parts ex-situ (breeding of endangered species) and in-situ conservation. The aim of this subject is the introduction to important activities of zoological institutions, their international cooperation as well as their roles in supporting of nature conservation. Cooperation between zoos and other scientific institution will be highlighted based on the example of the cooperation between University of Ostrava and Ostrava Zoo that represents one of the best in the Czech Republic. Most of the teaching will occur in the attractive environment of zoos: in Ostrava and Olomouc. Discussions with zoo specialist will be included. |
