Annotation: | The aim of the course is to introduce students to the theory and practice of translation as intercultural communication and to guide them to identify and develop competences needed for effective translation practice. The course focuses on the individual stages of the translation process: the methodology and practice of the source text analysis, including the essentials of genre analysis and the cultural specificity of genres in different discourse domains to achieve an in-depth understanding of the source text and an adequate expression of the message in the target language. The course develops students' awareness of the criteria of translation quality, their ability to critically review and proofread translated texts, reflect on their own translations, offer peer feedback, and post-edit machine translations. In this course the source language will always be English (min. B2+ level is expected) and the target language of the translations will be Czech (C2 level of competence is thus essential). As the aim of the course is also to develop the communicative competence in Czech as the target language of translation, translations into Slovak are not possible. The course is taught online on the LMS Moodle platform of the University of Ostrava, with one introductory and one final in-person sessions at the UO. Most of the online study is asynchronous, with one synchronous online meeting in the middle of the term - the date and time of the synchronous meeting will be agreed on at the introductory in-person session. |
