Annotation:This course examines examines literary controversies and the "cultural politics" of the United States. Topics include: - the origins and emergence of distinctive regional and ethnic cultures; - the role of cultural production in fostering national identity; - changing cultural and artistic styles over the course of US history; - cultural hierarchies and categories of taste and judgment; - the influence of ethnic styles, arts and subcultures on the cultural mainstream; - "countercultures" and challenges to prevailing cultural authority; - "culture wars" past and present; - controversies and "moral panics" associated with cultural change, including the rise of new media.
