Annotation:	The aim of the course is to deepen the linguistic background of students via giving their knowledge a general linguistic, typological and contrastive dimension. The main attention is focused on the classification and comparison of languages, with the accent put on the language typology of English and Czech. Moreover, lectures deal with relevant chapters in the history of linguistics.
