Annotation: | The aim of the lectures is to acquaint students with the essentials of phonetics and phonology and provide them with the basic understanding of the mechanisms of production and perception of the human speech, namely in the following areas: the fundamental discipline terminology, the information about the articulatory and acoustic features of speech sounds, the description of vowel and consonant repertoire of English in contrast with Czech, the segmentation of coherent speech, rudiments of English prosody, speech sound changes within the spoken utterances, intonation, acoustic language form and its graphic transcription, the English dialects and varieties. The history and the current state of the phonetic and phonological research will also be mentioned. The aim of the seminars is to improve some important aspects of pronunciation, which should be adopted by advanced English students and, the consolidation of theoretical knowledge acquired in the lectures and its practical application on the concrete language material. The object of the practice are perceptive and reproductive exercises, phonetic transcription of English speech sounds, later on texts, which gradually acquaints the students with the fundamental phonetic and phonological principles of English and develops their acquired theoretical knowledge as well as the level of their pronunciation. |
